Poetry

By Rosemund Handler

Rosemund Handler  |  Winter 2008  -  Number 212

Art

There’s art in the artist yet
in the coils of her lashes
the swell of her lips

the slashes behind her hairline
stitch back bloated years
cheeks scored by one-liners

neck by tall tales
eyelids quilted canopies
blinking away

the wisdom of the survivor
until no battle scar creases
her sly aging

the past vanquished by tricks
by her yearning for it
only her smile

gap-toothed and brown
keeps her from
being young forever

Rosemund J Handler lives in Cape Town. Her third novel Tsamma Season will be published by Penguin in 2009.
