A Rabbi of Teaneck

by Daniel Meltz

Again the mighty Levi

a handsome devil in tight jeans

a scholar of pajamas and the law.

Again he comes to the door

in a tallis or a t-shirt

the brute of termination

marshal of minutiae

bereft as Heathcliff

but without the class resentment.

He is of his class however

the intermediate Levi

and I his lowly Israelite

a loser in the eyes of the sisterhood

but a prized and flapping goldfish

in the punchbowl of Jehovah

as the Passover candles

reflect in the window

and the bread of affliction burns.
